Hallstatt to Venice

September 30 Hallstatt to Venice

We left bright and early this morning (8ish) after a very good sleep. There were some clouds in the sky but we could still see the mist rising over the mountains.

Instead of going up and down the mountains in Austria and Italy we went through them. We must have driven through at least ten tunnels today, the longest being about eight kilometers. The driving was great until we reached Udine, Italy. I have never seen so many trucks on the highway. Fortunately, they must stay in the right lane but there are so many of them that you cannot possibly pass them all. Michelle counted over 200 in one row but she says that we passed way more than that, maybe around 500 en route to Venice.

It is expensive to drive on the Autostrada...we paid 21.60 Euro today. Before we leave here I will investigate getting some kind of pass.

We arrived at our campsite at around 2:30 and are parked just across the lagoon from Venice. The bus (boat) leaves the dock for Venice just outside he gate, on the hour and returns from Venice on the half hour. We caught the 4:00 and were walking along the canals in Venice by 4:30.

The port was filled with water taxis, vaporettos (city boats...like city buses), cruise ships and gondolas. We spent the next couple of hours exploring by walking around the city. It is fascinating to see all the boats tied up outside of houses, instead of cars parked in driveways. We stopped at a cafe for a coffee and hot chocolate and made note of the things we would like to do tomorrow. On our way back to the boat, we stopped in at a couple of churches and galleries.

The streets began to thin out a bit and we realized that it was because most of the cruise ships were leaving port. Venice is very touristy and quite frankly, so far, a bit disappointing. Perhaps after a full day of exploring tomorrow we will feel differently.
